Rio de Janeiro Carnival: Why is it so special?

It's difficult to hear about Carnival and not think about Rio de Janeiro, isn't it? Every year the city receives approximately 1 million tourists from all over the world who come to experience Rio's fun up close. But, after all, what makes Rio de Janeiro Carnival so special?

To answer this question, we wrote this article with the aim of highlighting everything that the festivities in the wonderful city include. So, prepare your costume, glitter, glitter, confetti and come with us!

Rio de Janeiro Samba Schools Parade

Without a doubt, one of the attractions that the public most seeks out is watching the Samba Schools parade at the Sambadrome. The most popular days are Sunday and Monday of Carnival. On these days, the Special Group schools will present themselves, bringing together champions such as Portela, Mangueira and Beija-Flor.

The following Saturday is the day of the Parade of Champions, when those with the best scores in the polls carried out on Ash Wednesday pass through the avenue. The last school to parade is, obviously, the champion of the year.

So, if you come to Rio Carnival and miss both days of the parade, don't worry. As a last resort, you can still check out the champions in Marquês de Sapucaí.

Rio de Janeiro Carnival street blocks

Another unmissable spot are the street blocks! It's very difficult to get around the city and not find at least one block. And there are all types: marchinhas, samba, even rock n´ roll and nerd marches.

Unlike Carnival parties that require a ticket and abadá, Rio's blocks have nothing like that: just enter and join the party! The only thing necessary is willingness, a lot of energy and animation, especially in those filled with people like Monobloco, Banda de Ipanema and Carmelitas, classics of Rio's festivities.

Security at Carnival

Street blocks bring together a lot of people, so some precautions are necessary so you can enjoy them without worrying.

Firstly, it is important to take as few belongings as possible; jewelry, branded watches and the like can stay at home or at the hotel. Cell phones are essential nowadays, so take them somewhere safe (in your front pants pocket or handbag, for example).

Don't even take a lot of money with you, just enough to drink, eat and take a taxi if necessary. After all, you won't need to spend a lot to have fun!

Tips for Carnival in Rio

Finally, if you are thinking about spending Carnival in the wonderful city, some tips are necessary to make everything go well:

  • Book flights and accommodation in advance, as the closer the date is, the more expensive it is and the fewer options there will be. After all, the whole world wants to experience Rio Carnival!
  • Also secure your tickets to see the Samba Schools parade with a travel agency. It is common to find scalpers selling on the same day, but purchasing your tickets from a company in the sector is better.

So, we can understand why the Rio de Janeiro Carnival is so special: it is a very fun party that appeals to everyone, from those who want to calmly watch the parades to those who want to skip all the blocks!
